899 hd si

Post by luke » Tue Jan 28, 2014 9:41 pm

899 low speed gps readings move all over the place.Humminbird told me they were no good for less than 2 mph.not worth having for trolling. They also said I could purchase a external gps receiver.Dont really want to buy a 1000 dollar fish finder then spend another 150 to fix their defect.Humminbird has seems to have a problem with internal receiver they don't seem to read as good as external.Problem is they know it an don't wont to work with me to resolve the issue. So if you use your gps speed for trolling don't buy the new 899.

No unit on its own will give accurate direction or speed if the unit cannot determine which direction it is going. It takes consecutive track points within a certain time to determine direction and speed.

You could have a Lowrance unit that won't have the donut at slow speeds, but the position curser will wander around on the chart view.

The remedy with both companies is a GPS antenna with a built-in compass.
Lowrance's version is the Point 1 antenna. Humminbird's is the HS antenna- AS GPS HS

The 899 is no different than all the Humminbird units before that model or any other model/ brand.

You can add a speed wheel accessory if trolling speed is that important to you.

Ive got the 1197 an 797 also had a 798 all these work great. They all have external receiver. The 899 is the only one out of the four that has this issue. The only one of the four with internal receiver. From my experience the internal dosent do the same job as the external. :(

I would guess your issue is the mount location since the 899 has a better antenna than any of the former external GPS antennas.

This was posted by a Humminbird rep today on another site as part of a discussion about GPS antennas and accuracy.

"Plus the Internal Receiver in the 9 Series models 859, 899, 959, 999, 1159 and 1199 is a 56 Channel Receiver plus the 300 and 600 Series feature the same Internal 56 Channel Receiver."

The unit is mounted the same place as the 797 an the 798 were mounted. mount location is no different only difference is the unit that sits in the same place .this unit is mounted on the front of a bass boat, the most open spot on the boat I could have possibly put the unit.I am using a 50 channel receiver on the 1197 an it out performs the 899 at low speeds for what ever the reason.

Try two things:

Do the Default setting.

Verify you have adequate power at the unit. Turn on the Voltage readout to see what the loaded voltage is.
It makes no difference what your smaller units did, the larger units use more amps.

haven't been on the water yet.Butt if you read crappie.com.Im not the only one with this issue. The 999 is giving the same trouble.the guy that posted has had the same luck getting issue resolved as Ive had. They tell you to buy an external receiver. The units prior to the new ones work great. But the internal on the 899an999 are having the same issue. When will Humminbird admit they have a problem with the new units.Just letting you know the more I read into this the more unhappy customers HUmminbird is getting.

That makes me wonder about the rest of the XX9 models.
They are so new that the word is not out much yet.

Im not sure either. If hummingbird would work with me on this issue it wouldn't be no big deal.Butt they just absouletly refuse.I have called an called several times.A supervisor from hummingbird was suppose to call me back never did.The post I looked at on the 999 this guy was saying the same thing .Humminbird are taking loyal customers an making them not so loyal.with their customer support on this issue.Appreciate you trying to help me out.

Luke, if you would e-mail me your name, address and any customer number they may have given you I can see about a supervisor calling.

By the way, what is the Fix Type and HDOP and Est Pos Error numbers on your 899ci HD Si unit?
Next time out, try connecting your 899 unit to your 1197’s connections and see if it the GPS reacts differently or not.

Got on the water today.Hummibird never said anything about a customer number. The speed would go from.2 to 1.4 back an fourth.I borrowed a 16 channel receiver from one of my relatives an put it on last night.Today the unit would read .2-.3-.4 . I fished from 7 am to about 2 pm.7 hours an the unit performed great.Speed locked on no problem. The only problem is I half to give his receiver back.Too much undoing an doing to get the 50 channel off my1197 up to the front.THats why I chose to use his.Now the external verses the internal has been proven do you have any suggestion how I can get hummingbird to be fair with me.THank You for Your Help.

Someone should be able to look your records up by name and address. I’ll forward a message to one of them now.
