Compatibility with 360

Post by Sorin » Tue Feb 28, 2012 5:57 am

Hi
In the specs of the new 360 imaging feature , in the Humminbird site it is specified : you need an Ethernet-ready, Side Imaging-equipped Humminbird fishfinder. Compatible models include:
1198c SI Combo | 998c SI Combo | 898c SI Combo | 798ci HD SI Combo

Is also the 997 SI , compatible with 360 Imaging , or is needed a 998 SI ?

Thank you

No, it's not compatible. It has no ethernet port. That was one of the changes from it to the 998.

The ethernet units have not been out that long, so HB has left a lot of it's potential customers out in the cold on this one. But it is what it is.

I thought so also

Interesting is that Cabelas begun the preorders for the system and at the end of the description is mentioned that older units needs an software update .
Are they mistaking?

Older units

Well if you buy one of those sonar units made before the 360 unit is on the market, that unit will be an older unit that won't have the software installed to operate it. You will need a software update.
If you wait to buy one of the sonar units made after the 360 in on the market, it will already have the software installed.

If it is only a matter of software update , it will be very easy .
I am afraid that for units older that 998 , it will be needed to bu a new 998 unit
Unfortunately Humminbird didn't made this point clear up to now

What Wayne is saying is that all the current 998 (and 798 and 1198) owners will need a software update to make this work. Eventually, those units will come from the factory with those updates pre-installed, and those will, of course, not require an update.

HB did make it clear right up front that it would not work with older units, from what I read. First and foremost, it was clear that it used the ethernet port, which only the newer units have.

It will be interesting to see how many folks get this addon, once it becomes available. There are some significant drawbacks to it, IMO.

I would not use the 360 in that form. If a trolling motor transducer version is developed, I may re-consider.
My primary fishing is done in these conditions:

Good point, Wayne. A lot of our lakes look like that, too. I'd guess the TM mount is not going to happen as the constant turning of the TM head would likely mess up the image processing.

But I am used to SI on the trolling motor so a distorted round image wouldn't be anymore unfamilar than the SI images are. For a complete scan all you would have to do is not turn the trolling motor for a few seconds and the display update would be just as good as a transom transducer would do. Being aware of the motor direction would be the only concern. For some boats a longer TM shaft may be required if seeing what is behind the boat is useful. It wouldn't concern me as forward and to the sides would be my area of interest. The amount and direction of what is displayed is adjustable.
I see it as way more useful at the bow than the transom for bass fishing.
