whats the difference between the 798ci units? hd and non hd?

Post by chrome- » Wed Apr 25, 2012 6:17 am

well i'm kinda considering getting the new lowrance elite-4x down imaging sonar for $185 shipped... i also am looking at the 798ci...

i noticed when looking at the 798ci there are 2 units and about a $130 price differnce... there seems to be a 798ci Si that i can get for $750 or there is a 798ci HD Si that is around $887... what is the difference between the "HD" and "non HD" version? is it worth the price difference?

i also fish alot of big acre ponds... i dont have a gas engine on my boat yet... i have a sun dolphin 120 pro boat... love it, but i'm currently using a lowrance x510c which i really still dont know how to read good.. dont understand it and cant find any good videos... i dont know if i'm lookin at patch of grass, tree, bait fish etc... i'm kinda a newbie but have used it for 3 years now lol... is it even worth getting a down imaging system let alone a side imaging for the kind of fishing i do? i live in indiana and there are some tournaments on these small bodies of water i fish... havent entered any yet but have been thinking about it

The biggest difference is the HD has an ethernet port, which makes it easy to link to other HB units so they can share some info, like waypoints. Probably not a useful feature in your current setup. Also has a different base map, I believe, but neither is likely to have much pond detail.

SI/DI and better 2d sonar can help your fishing for sure. You're able to see the weed beds better, find the edges of them, see structure off to the sides, etc. Great fishing tools.

so is the ethernet the only difference? is it worth it to pay the extra money for the HD unit? i am also planing on getting a gas motor for my boat and fishing the bigger lakes and or a new bigger boat so im kinda buying the unit for future use on bigger lakes....and how does the si/di do in water less than 10ft... i've heard that di blows in water less than 10ft...

If your future plans might involve having more than 1 HB unit on a boat, then yes, I'd say the HD is worth the extra money to be able to link them. Also, the new 360 scan requires an ethernet port. So the HD should allow you to add that down the road also, if you wanted to.

798ci HD SI

The 798ci HD SI is the current model of the 798 series Side Imaging units.
The 798c SI and 798ci SI are discontinued (Legecy) units.
The price difference you see advertized reflects the age difference.
