Yes, you can use an external GPS Receiver with the 788ci HD DI model unit.

thanks Greg, just wondering if the gps will be more reliable with the external than the internal ? my internal lasted just a bit over 2 years and by no means heavy use. thanks and nice to have all you humminbird guys helping us out !!!!!!!!!

More reliable? Yes, it should last more than two years but then the internal GPS Receiver should have lasted longer than two years as well. At least this way you get to mount the GPS Receiver closer to the transducer for a little more accuracy in marking and going back to your waypoints.

yeah, i figured it was cheaper to buy a new external than to repair the head unit. i live in minnesota and fish mill lacs lake alot and get in some pretty rough water chasing walleye so maybe the big waves had a hand in it going out ? it was counsel mounted and i do like the idea of having it closer to the ducer. i searched the internet and can`t find a post-stem mounting kit for it ? any ideas where to get one short of making it ? thanks again Greg

We don’t sell one with the stem but there is a bottom housing that comes with the GR50 to adapt it to one. Try searching for a VHF radio antennae or mast mount as it uses the same threads.

i got the gps reciever saturday, hooked it up and it`s 100%. i want to buy another one but the humminbird accessory book says it only fits 800 models on up. the part # i bought and hooked up is "as gr50 407480-1". the one i want to buy is part # " as gpr 408920-1". i read it will work with software ver. 6.30 on up. i have 7.13 in my 788 but the catalog said it only works with the 800`s and up. hoping it will work if i buy it ? i want the 2nd one for an ice fishing set up. i did look up the vhf antenna like you said and many nice low cost options, thanks again Greg.

Not sure why it is not listed but with the 7.130 software the 788ci HD DI is compatible.
