898c HD SI and Navionics+

Post by Rubberduck25 » Sat Jan 11, 2014 4:33 am

Hi guys,
I have a 898c HD SI Plotter and since yesterday a Navionics+
chart. Now I got 2 issues.
- The update page if Navionics explains me that my plotter
Isn't compatible with more than app. 810MB of map data on one
Chip so I can't download more. But the Chip would allow 2GB.
What's the problem and what can I do to fix it?
According to Navionics I could download 2GB if the plotter would support it.
- The community layer isn't supported by my plotter according to
the update page. Is there an update for my plotter to support this layer or when
can I expect such an update to be available?
Thanks for your support! !

Your unit can use the Platinum version which currently is a 16 GB card.

If you screw up a download with the area selection box too big, you will loose whatever capacity the card has.

Using the Navionics+ product, you select the amount of data to download by adjusting the data box on the map. Once you download what you selected, it is permanent. You can add additional locations as often as you want up to a total file size of 2GB. Always leave enough unused space on the card to update Freshest Data and Sonar Charts--that takes space too.

To properly use Navionics+ to get the most data, you adjust the selection box to only cover the water you want to download and then download it. Doing a download for a Humminbird unit, only select Sonar Charts and Nautical Charts. Do not select Community Edits--that is a Lowrance function-- Humminbirds are not Lowrance units so don't expect your unit to act like one. Currently Lowance owners can't participate in the Sonar Charts program, but they can view what Humminbird owners have contributed.

There is a counter at the bottom right of the map selection panel that shows what data you have.

Dear Wayne,
it wasn't written anywhere that everything I download
is permanent! However I still just downloaded 800 MB
yet. So why I get a message that my unit doesn't support
more data? I am still far away from the 2GB you and
Navionics mention.
Beside that I plan to send back the card as 1st I can only
download app. 810 MB and second it was nowhere mentioned
that its permanent and the downloaded area cant be reduced.

Contact Navionics with your issues. I am not a Navionics rep or employee. I just know how to use their products.

Did you watch the operation instructions video on their web site for how to use the Navionics+ software?

Dear Wayne,
t
hank you for your support. Yes i will contact Navionics.
So the 898 unit definitely has no kind of "800MB" max. Chart size, right?

Regarding Community Edits i just read that the Onix and ION Series of Humminbird
supports this data layer. And these 2 units are from Humminbird and not from Lowrance,
right? So i just expect that my 898 can do the same as the Onix and ION, at least after
a SW update. Cant be such a big issue to add this function as its already included
in these 2 Humminbird units!

Thanks!

There is no mapping size limit that I am aware of with the unit itself.
I just updated my Platinum East card a couple of days ago and the file size is now 9.96 GB. My 1198 reads the card with no issues.

I don't know about the ION and ONIX, but the rest of the Humminbird units do not utilize the Community Edits.
To contibute to and view Community Edits, you need a Lowrance unit as far as I know.
Additionally with a Lowrance unit, the map data can be shared, but not with Humminbird units. Evidently that is a unit software function since it was added to Lowrance units via software update.
Josh or Paul can confirm that if either monitors this site.

When a Navionics update is done there is a pop-up note to deselect Community Edits for Humminbird users since it takes up memory space on the card that can't be used.

BTW, your 898 is not anywere near the ONIX or ION. They are completely different units with different operating software.
They won't share data or accessories via any connection with any other Humminbird units.
Those units are targeting the blue water market.
