Helix 9 and AIS

Post by Spudgunman » Mon Aug 08, 2016 2:03 am

I just got a helix 9 updated it and put on boat.
I see 2 PDF showing how to use and install connectivity with my AIS radio.

I can't make anything work with the Helix9 the accessory AIS manual from Humminbird states to go to the helix accessory menu and click AIS - I have nothing but screenshot as an accessory.

Anyone got any ideas?

Is the radio ON and connected when you are trying to link it?

I am turning the radio on before the helix - I am also on land so I don't know if the plotter sends blank strings - also the lack of good documentation I am not sure I am hooking it up correctly.

What to you mean link it?

oh boy this isnt fun or easy.. I called support and they didnt help at all ...

so went back to it ..ok here is some progress..

GX2200 yellow to Helix Green
GX2200 blue to helix white
GX2200 green to helix ground

GX2200 on 4800b
Helix NMEA output off

still nothing...

after some tinkering I think.. put the GX2200 in demo mode so it shoots AIS data?
after a lot of hit and miss and powering things on and off I see the accessory AIS menu, but its stability is horrible. sometimes its there some times its not I have no idea how to make it consistent (connections soldered)

if anyone at humminbird is listening this whole process needs a overhaul IMO

so My assumption is when your setting this up in your garage with out AIS data flowing live it wont work, and to add to the fun it seems to need to be flowing when the helix powers on? otherwise it wont find it later? I have no idea as the documentation for this stuff is written horribly.

some notes the GX2200 only seems to work when I have the NMEA set to 4800 and the helix head unit is set to NMEA output off.

I have the AIS menu sometimes, but I show nothing on the screen and there is no tracking list of ships (mind you im only in demo mode) real Pain in the ass to have to go to a busy water way to try and configure and set this up..

looking for any help still as its not working stable or reliably yet.

called support they suggested this

Standard GX2200 to HELIX, AIS Wiring
GX2200 HELIX
Yellow AIS Data Output + Green Data Input +
White AIS Data Output - Black (Shield) Data Input -
Alternate wiring
GX2200 HELIX
Yellow AIS Data Output + Green Data Input +
White GX2200 Chassis Gnd. Black (Shield) Data Input -

however now I cant get AIS menu on helix no matter what I try.. seems to not work at all now.

so I found out that if you dont have AIS radio traffic present.. it wont work.. did a on the water test and all was working as expected.
